An Amazing People: The Hinghwa
The history and stories of the Hinghwa people challenge the long-held perception that they were merely rickshaw pullers, trishaw riders, or taxi drivers.
On the contrary, history have shown that the Hinghwa possess a rich and vibrant heritage, with a long-standing reputation as a centre of culture and literature — one that has been associated with the city of Confucius.
Despite being one of the smaller ethnic groups in China, the Hinghwa people made significant contributions during two of China’s three golden ages. Likewise, following their migration to the Nanyang, they played an important role — together with other communities — in shaping the region’s progress and prosperity, contributing to what I call the Golden Age of the Nanyang.
In China, the Hinghwa produced numerous imperial scholars, many of whom rose to become ministers and high-ranking officials.
In 1565, a magistrate named Xu Zhice recognised their hometown, Putian, as a “Coastal Centre of Culture and Literature” (文献名邦、海滨邹鲁) — an exceptional distinction reflecting the intellectual achievements of the Hinghwa people.
During the Tang and Song dynasties, many Hinghwa officials became known for their courage and integrity. They did not hesitate to challenge even members of the imperial family when principles were at stake. Rather than compromise their values, they chose resignation — demonstrating moral conviction under immense pressure.
Interestingly, such integrity was often valued, and some were later recalled to serve. In times of war, Hinghwa individuals also fought valiantly — against Mongol forces during the Song Dynasty and later against the Manchurians during the Qing Dynasty. When faced with defeat, many chose honour over surrender, reflecting the same steadfast spirit as their generals.
In the Nanyang, their descendants continued to reflect these qualities. They have served in key leadership roles — including Ministers of Defence, Foreign Affairs, Finance and Economy, Housing, and Human Resources — as well as legislative council members. Through diplomacy and public service, they earned the respect and trust of the people. In doing so, they echoed the legacy of ancient Putian, producing ministers and numerous high-ranking officials across the region.
Among them is a distinguished branch of the Ng Geok Soo family, whose members were appointed to committees under the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), as reported by Osmond Chia (2025) — a rare and prestigious honour.
In the medical field, many Hinghwa individuals have held prominent positions, including heads of institutions and professors.
Today, Hinghwa-led organisations are associated with one of China’s largest networks of private medical services.
In academia, there are also distinguished figures such as Professor Gong Qihuang, who serves as President of Peking University.
In the commercial sphere, Hinghwa entrepreneurs include some of Asia’s wealthiest individuals, with major contributions in property development, banking, and finance.
Notably, many Hinghwa women have risen above significant challenges to excel at the highest levels of their professions. Some have achieved international recognition, with innovations that have made a global impact. A dedicated chapter honours these remarkable individuals, celebrating them as “Hinghwa Flowers.”
This brief overview offers a glimpse into the remarkable story of the Hinghwa people.
Their contributions to the arts and sciences, together with their resilience in preserving their identity through changing eras, have left an enduring mark on history.
In this work, we explore the lives of outstanding individuals who served as beacons to their communities, while examining the social structures and cultural values that shaped their achievements. Through this, we seek to uncover the rich tapestry of Hinghwa heritage and celebrate its lasting influence on the world. We also trace the rise of their descendants, who continue to embody the Hinghwa spirit of excellence.
Join me on this journey as I present The World of the Hinghwa People.

Eminent Hinghwas of Ancient China

During China’s golden era, the city of Putian distinguished itself by producing an exceptional number of high-ranking officials, including ministers. It was honored with the title “The Centre of Culture and Literature,” echoing the prestige of Confucius’s own hometown, Qufu.
Ancient Ministers

The 18 ministers, including 2500 imperial scholars with 21 champions (with honours), gave Putian the title of Centre of Culture and Literature.'
This set a foundation for the descendants of the pioneers to achieve similar success in Nanyang. They were our light of hope
