Hinghwa Identity in the Nanyang

Two Towns, One People

In ancient times, the Hinghwa homeland in Putian underwent several rounds of rezoning under different dynasties and administrations. The region historically revolved around areas such as Quanzhou, Xinghua Jun, Fuqing, Putian, and Xianyou.

In the Nanyang, migrants from these regions were collectively known as Hinghwa, even by people from other ethnic groups. This term became a cultural shorthand for those with roots in the broader Puxian-speaking community. According to Mr. Wang Wenzhen, a member of the Jiangdou Village Committee, the correct definition of the group in Chinese should be 兴化群体 or Hinghwa group, and not 兴化族 (Hinghwa ethnic group).

Occasionally, Hinghwa elders might refer to their homeland using various names such as "Pou Leng" (Putian; 莆田), "Pou Sen" (Puxian; 莆仙), or "HockPouSen" (FuPuXian; 福莆仙). These variations arose due to shifting political and administrative boundaries throughout Chinese history.

One example of such administrative reshuffling occurred when Fuqing became part of Fuzhou, taking along a district called Jiangdou. This created a wave of identity confusion among early migrants to the Nanyang. When registering for identity cards, Hinghwa people from Jiangdou began listing Fuqing as their place of origin. In local dialect, this rendered them as Hockchia, which led to them being identified as part of the Hockchia community, a different identity altogether.

The confusion was formally addressed in 1948 with the establishment of the Singapore Hock Po Sian Association (新加坡福莆仙公会), which aimed to unify the Hinghwa people from Fuqing, Putian, and Xianyou. The Fu Pu Xian Dong Yue Guan Temple (福莆仙东岳观) in Jiangkou, Putian, stands as a lasting testament to the unity of these communities.

However, in Singapore, distinctions persisted. In 1974, a group of Jiangdou Hinghwa established the Singapore Kang-Tau Ong Clansmen Association (新加坡江兜王氏公会), setting themselves apart from the mainstream Hinghwa who were represented by the Hin Ann Huay Kuan and other Hinghwa associations.

According to Cheng, L. K. (1993, pp. 28-29), there are two groups of Hinghwa-speaking people. The first group originates from the Xing'an Prefecture, which includes Putian County and Xianyou County. The second group comes from Fuqing County, and most individuals in this group share the surname "Ong." They are primarily concentrated in Jiangdou, where a river separates them from the neighboring area of Jiangkou in Putian. Additional details can be found in the section titled "Singapore Kang-Tau Ong Clansmen Association."  (新加坡江兜王氏公会)'.

Today, with the passing of the pioneer generation, both the Singapore HockPoSian Association and the Singapore Kang-Tau Ong Clansmen Association are either no longer active or defunct.

Brief History of the Jiangdou 'Wang' Clan

Wang Yanqing (Ancestor of Jiangdou 'Wang' clan
Source: Ethan Ong

Jiangdou (江兜) was formerly known as Jianggao (江皋), a name believed to have referred to its location on higher ground beside the river that flows alongside Jiangkou, Putian. Before its administrative transfer to Fuqing, Jiangdou was under the jurisdiction of Putian. From this historical perspective, Jiangdou may be regarded as a Hinghwa village. Today, the village is located at Fujian Province, Fuqing City, Xincuo Town, Jiangdou Village, Fujian Province. (福建省福清市新厝镇江兜村).

This historical connection may also explain why many families in Jiangdou bear surnames such as Yao (姚), Lin (林), Huang (黄), Chen (陈), and Zhuo (卓)--surnames that remain common in Jiangkou, Putian, to this day.

During the Ming Dynasty, frequent raids by Japanese pirates forced many families to flee their homes. Among them was a family led by Wang Yanqing (王严清), courtesy name Cheng (字誠), from Shibiwei, Nan'an, Fujian Province (福建省南安象鼻尾). Accompanied by his five sons, he eventually settled in Jiangdou. He is therefore regarded as the founding ancestor of the Jiangdou Wang clan.

The village's name was officially changed from Jianggao to Jiangdou in 1927, about a decade after the establishment of the Republic of China. The new name is said to have reflected the village's geographical setting from a high ground near the river to one that is surrounded by water because of its close proximity to the estuary.

Like their neighbours across the river in Putian, the people of Jiangdou placed great importance on education.

One teacher who taught there was Chen Qing Shan, the father of Singapore's former Minister of State, Mr. Chen Minliang. Qing Shan's father himself was a Qing Scholar (秀才; Xiu Cai).

The close historical and cultural ties between Jiangdou and  Putian were also reflected in the FuPuXian Temple in Jiangkou, Putian. The name FuPuXian is an acronym representing Fuqing, Putian, and Xianyou, the three closely connected districts of the Hinghwa region.

An identity dilemma, however, emerged when many people from Jiangdou migrated to Singapore and other parts of Nanyang. As Jiangdou had by then come under the jurisdiction of Fuqing County, many registered themselves as "Hock Chia", the dialect name for Fuqing. This registration was administratively correct, particularly as Singapore and Malaysia were then part of British Malaya.

During my research, however, I found that this administrative classification had created some confusion over the community's cultural identity. Some descendants were surprised to learn that, historically and culturally, they were closely connected to the Hinghwa people. The issue therefore deserves a clear explanation.

According to clan records, the ancestor of the Jiangdou Wang clan was Wang Yanqing (王严清) who led his five sons from Shibiwei, Nan'an, Fujian Province (福建省南安石鼻尾) to settle in Jiangdou. Their ancestral roots can therefore be traced to Shibiwei, while their later homeland became Jiangdou in Fuqing.

In terms of ancestral origin, the Jiangdou Wang clan traces its roots to Shibiwei, Nan'an. In terms of locality, they are from Jiangdou, Fuqing. In terms of cultural and dialect identity, however, they belong to the Hinghwa community.

Many people from Jiangdou, Fuqing have openly identified themselves as Hinghwa, including prominent figures such as Chin Peng (Ong Boon Hua). Today, the clan boast of a long list of highly successful professionals and entrepreneurs across the region. Their history and an impressive list of pioneers lined the walls of the Ong Cho Tek Cultural Museum in Jiangdou, Fuqing.

Romance of the Hinghwa People.

In those days, there were no telephones, let alone mobile phones. To communicate between boats on a river or out at sea, people had to shout at the top of their lungs. This might help explain why the Hinghwa people are often known for being loud speakers. Even when saying “I love you,” it might sound rough or thunderous. But the ladies don’t mind at all, because once a couple is in love, the whole world should know. And what could be better than a love-struck man boldly declaring his feelings for all to hear, with his songs. *

Wang Wenzhen

Wang Wenzhen, aged 53, is a native of Jiangdou Village, Xincuo Town, Fuqing City, Fujian Province. He is the chief editor of the Jiangdou Village Chronicle (《江兜村志》).

As a civil servant, Wang has dedicated himself to safeguarding the heritage of Jiangdou Village. He has played a leading role in the restoration of historical buildings and artefacts, including the ancestral seven-room mansion of Ong Cho Tek, one of the major pioneers of the bicycle trade in Nanyang.

Wang is also a curator and dedicated historian who has devoted himself to documenting the cultural heritage and history of the Jiangdou people. His impressive collection of historical records and stories about the Jiangdou Wang Clan in Nanyang was compiled into the Jiangdou Village Chronicle (《江兜村志》).

The pages of his book have come alive in the Ong Cho Tek Cultural Museum, where his meticulously compiled work is displayed along the walls of the ancestral seven-room mansion. The mansion is popularly known as Beipan Qijianwu (北爿七间屋), or the Seven-Room Mansion of Beipan — the ancestral home of Ong Cho Tek.

Ong Cho Tek was one of the Hinghwa pioneers from Jiangdou and Jiangkou, Putian, who helped pioneer the bicycle trade in Nanyang under the leadership of Yeow Weiqi.

Wang's relentless pursuit of historical facts has transformed his collection into a valuable exhibition in Ong Cho Tek's ancestral home. The mansion has now become a proud museum showcasing the resilience, determination, and achievements of the people who came from this historic village.

His remarkable work mirrors the dedication of the ancient sages whose preservation of knowledge and history has enabled generations to learn about and take pride in their heritage.

The remarkable work of Wang Wenzhen is highly regarded and makes the Ong Cho Tek Cultural Museum a place well worth visiting.

In Singapore, a young and aspiring historian of the Jiangdou “Wang” Clan is emerging. He is Ethan Ong, a medical student who is quietly embarking on a journey to uncover and preserve the history of his ancestors.

In His Father’s Footsteps…

In his father’s footsteps, Ethan has just embarked on a journey towards a career in medicine. This comes as no surprise, given that his lineage includes some of Singapore’s most prominent medical professionals.

To begin with, his grandfather was Dr. Ong Yong Khee, one of the pioneers of the medical profession in the Hinghwa community. His father, Dr. Fabian Ong, took over the patriarch’s clinic as advancing age eventually compelled him to retire. Together, they form part of a distinguished lineage of medical professionals that includes Prof. Dr. Ong Yong Yau, Dr. Ong Yong Wan, and Prof. Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan, Singapore’s Minister for Foreign Affairs.

Despite his impressive family lineage, Ethan remains a very humble young man with a quiet mission: to uncover the rich history of his great-great-grandfather, the Hinghwa pioneer Ong Ban Bee.

His work thus far has been impressive. He has painstakingly collated and compiled the history and stories of the Jiangdou “Wang” Clan, a small but formidable Hinghwa group in Nanyang.

I have no doubt that his book will be well worth reading, if he intends to write one in the future about his journey.

Note: Special thanks to Ethan Ong for his meticulous vetting and editing of the articles relating to the Jiangdou 'Wang' Clan.

The Putian Connection to the Chaoshan People

I first heard about the connection between the Chaoshan people and Putian when I was about fifteen years old. More than fifty years later, after I began researching the history and stories of the Hinghwa people, I encountered the same account again. This prompted me to explore the subject further.

During my research, I discovered that Hong Kong business leader Li Ka-shing is also from the Chaoshan region. He has acknowledged that his ancestors came from Fujian, and officials in Putian have identified his ancestral home as Baidang (白塘), Putian.

According to his recorded family genealogy, Li Ka-shing's lineage traces back to the Tang Dynasty imperial Li family. Like his distant relative Li Fu, he is widely respected for his philanthropy. Throughout his life, he has remained deeply devoted to his hometown in Chaoshan, contributing generously to educational, medical and community development projects.

Li Ka-shing is only one example of the many outstanding people from Chaoshan whose ancestral roots can be traced to Putian. Historians generally agree that the Chaoshan region was settled through several waves of migration, including significant migration from Putian and other parts of Fujian during the Tang and Song dynasties. This shared heritage helps explain the many cultural similarities that continue to exist between the Hinghwa and Chaoshan communities today.

Hence, Li's ancestral origin is in Baitang, Putian (Fujian). In terms of locality, he was from Chaoan (Guangdong). So, in this regard, Li can be said to be a Chaoshan Hinghwa.

Both communities have produced remarkable entrepreneurs, scholars and philanthropists whose contributions have had a lasting impact in China and around the world. Their stories deserve to be remembered, and many of these distinguished individuals will be featured on this website in due course.

Another remarkable Putian Connection to the Chaoshan People is Academician Huang Yuhua, who was named the Father of the Nuclear Submarine Programme in China. Although he was a native of Chao'an, he had not forgotten his ancestors' link to Putian. His story is told in the World of Eminent Hinghwa, China section.

The Putian Connection to the Hainan people

In my ongoing research, I have also discovered that many Putian people migrated to Hainan Island, where most of them settled in Wenchang County, on the northeast coast of the island. Some of these migrants were imperial scholars (Jinshi) and high office holders from the Tang Dynasty to the Southern Song Dynasty.

Many of the descendants of these ancient migrants have not forgotten their ancestral land in Putian. One of these was General Zhang Yunyi, who was born in Wenchang County on Hainan Island. During the civil war, he confided to his superior officers that he had his ancestry in Putian. The officer was surprised because he, too, was from Putian.

There are many more who are spread out across the Nanyang.

One of them is Ou Zongqing (欧宗清), who is a native of Thailand with his ancestors in Wenchang, Hainan Island. His remarkable story is featured in the World of Eminent Hinghwa, Thailand section. Though he was born in Thailand, his immediate ancestor was from Wenchang, Hainan. However, he has not forgotten his earlier ancestors who were from Putian. (Read more of his story in the World of Eminent Hinghwa, Thailand section).

When some members of the group from Hainan moved to the Nanyang, they were identified as Hainanese. Research on this community is still underway as attempts are being made to contact them. In Nanyang, their distinct identity would be recognized as Hainan Hinghwa. I hope to upload their stories as it surfaces, before too long.

Their story is briefly cited in https://wwwencyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Hainan+people
